Welcome to Photoshop! A good grasp of design is a very important skill in our visual, content-driven world. Our other Cloud Wise Academy classes will have taught you development – by taking this class you’ll gain the other crucial, complimentary piece: Design.
You’ll also start to gain a professional grasp of the most widely used and competitive tool for UI, photo manipulation, and visual design out there. And you’ll learn it from me, a professional designer with 20 years of experience using Photoshop.
I’ve used Photoshop to work on IPs such as Star Wars, the Clone Wars, the Matrix, and Terminator. If you want to become a professional, learn from a professional.
This course will be the first part of a three part course. I hope that if you take this class, you will be inspired to move on to our intermediate and advanced Photoshop courses!
What will you learn in the course?
You will gain an overview of the main tools and features included in Adobe photoshop. At the end of the class you will understand:
- Basic photoshop tools: Selection tools, brushes, layers, and photo-manipulation tools. These alone will unlock much of the capability of the program.
- Industry Terminology – Professionals speak about photoshop in ways that are fairly universal. We’ll allow you to participate in these conversations.
- Design techniques: This class isn’t just about photoshop – I’ll also teach you to think and communicate through color and shape. You’ll gain a good grasp of compositing and visual design.
What will we do in each class?
In each class, I will spend about an hour discussing the concepts that you will apply in each lesson. You will then spend the remainder of the time doing hands-on work with Photoshop. By the end of the class, you will use the lessons of visual design to complete a project – be it a website, a portion of a website, or something else entirely.
There is no homework in this class, but students are encouraged to tinker with Photoshop in their spare time! Simply playing around with concepts can be how we learn the most. I will be available to you online outside of class to answer your questions and provide assistance.
Who should take this class?
Anyone who wants a better understanding of design and Photoshop would benefit from this class. No prior experience with Photoshop or similar programs is required. No coding or web development experience is required.
However, this class would also be very beneficial to those with some familiarity of Photoshop and design. We will cover professional techniques and professional terminology that are not widely known and utilized.
What do we need to bring?
You will need a laptop. If it’s a Windows machine, it should be running at least Windows 7 and have 2 gigabytes of internal memory. If it is a Mac, it should be running El Capitan and also have at least 4 gigabytes of internal memory. Of course you will also want to bring a willingness to learn.
You will also need to download Adobe Photoshop CS6.
My name is Mark Soderwall. I own Indie Game University – a Redding startup that teaches aspiring game designers how to create and avoid the pitfalls of development. I am also the chief executive officer of Adjoy, another rapidly growing startup in Redding.
I have twenty years of professional game development under my belt. I’m credited on 43 different titles across 12 platforms (from AAA to mobile games). I’ve worked for Lucasarts, EA, and Atari.
I’ve been using Photoshop since it first came out. A good foundation in visual design is one of the most important skills you can have today, and I’m excited to share my knowledge of the premier design tool with fresh dreamers and creators.
This class will take place at the Cloud Wise Academy space in the Shasta Venture Hub, at 4300 Caterpillar road. Class will run for six weeks, twice a week, from 6-9 PM.
